Easter Treasure Hunt Blog Hop 2018

I decided to join in with Jo from Serendipitous Stitching and her Easter Treasure Hunt Blog Hop this year. To be a part of the fun all you do is start from Jo's blog and write down the letter that each blog is featuring to make this year's Easter Treasure Hunt phrase. When you figure out the phrase you should comment on Jo's blog:) So much fun!!!

I didn't end up getting anything new finished up in time for this blog hop, but I did 'finish/finish' a piece that I stitched up last year.

This is 'Carrots' By SubRosa. It was a free design created last spring for anyone purchasing another design in her Esty shop. I can't find it in her shop now, but maybe if you asked really nice she will add it at some point:)

 The chart came with instructions on making a pouch and felt carrots to go into the pouch.

The pouch was to have a green felt fringe on the top edge of it, but I didn't have the right shade of green felt so I left it off. I thought it would be fine, but it seems a little bare on the top, so I might try to track down some in the right shade and add it on. Also I think it needs a way to hang the pouch as it pretty much has to sit flat the way it is, but that can be fixed too:)

Craft On - A New Start

Linking up with Nicole at Frontier Dreams and her Crafting On blog hop.

After finishing my Tidal Sands Cowl last week, I went back and forth on whether I should start a new project or pull out an old one. Of course starting a new one won out!!

I went through and found the softest yarn I had and lo and behold, it was already packed away with the pattern I bought it to go with!!

I'm working on Cloud Wrap from Helen at Curious Handmade, knit with Knit Pick's Alpaca Cloud lace weight in colorway 'Anna'. This yarn is so very soft made from 100% baby alpaca. So far the wrap is a triangle of stockinette stitch with garter stitch edging, but I'm getting ready to start adding the star stitch.

I also played around with the sock I was making. If you remember I made one using THIS pattern. On the second sock I decided to make a couple changes. First I wanted the leg part longer, and I also added a few stitches to make it wider. Everything was going well until I got to the heel turn and I couldn't figure out how to make the extra stitches work. After quite a lot of time trying to figure things out, I tried on the first sock I made, decided that I still wanted the leg section longer but I really didn't need it to be bigger around, so I took it all apart and started over, again. I am happy with the change and excited to get this one done so I can make a matching sock and MAYBE actually have my first pair of knitted socks by the time the weather changes!?!? HAHAHA

Now I'm off to see what everyone else has been up to this week:)

Craft On - It's Finally Finished!!!

It has been a dark and stormy morning folks, and I wished that meant that we were actually getting some of the rain that is surrounding us, or that it was going to cool off some, but no. It only means that it is a really crappy day for taking pictures!! :) So these aren't going to be real great, but I didn't want to wait any longer to post my latest knitty finish...

This is Tidal Sands Cowl by Anne Hanson. I knit it in Knit Picks's Stroll Tweed (65% Merino, 25% Nylon, 10% Donegal Tweed) in the Oyster Heather colorway. This yarn was so nice to knit with. It is super soft and I'm really loving the tweed aspect of it:)

The only real problem I had with this is that my cast on edge is a lot looser than my bind off edge. No one will notice that when I'm wearing it, but it's something that I want to work on in the future.

I really hate selfies, and I'm not real good at figuring out how to wear scarves and such, but since it was a 'cool' 85 degrees out (and that was at 9:00 am, we are heading for 102 today :-0 !!) I thought I'd try it on.

Now I'm off to scramble through my stash. I was thinking of working on my socks, but now I'm thinking I need to start a new project. We will see what I come up with!!

Craft On - 1 Step at a Time

I'm still working away on my Tidal Sands Cowl. When I last posted, I was tinking back, and after that I knitted away for a while and realized that I still had a mistake back near the first one, so I tinked back some more (@#$$@#)!! I did finally remember what I HAVE to do every time I knit a lace pattern - COUNT!!! I have my project set up with a stitch marker every 40 stitches to make that easier, I had it set up that way from the beginning, but I was being bold wreak-less, and not counting as I have the pattern memorized at this point. Hmm, obviously it doesn't matter.

Anyhow, I'm back to making forward progress on it...

When I pulled this back out a couple weeks ago I was just starting on the 4th repeat and after knitting, tinking, knitting, tinking and knitting some more I am halfway through the 5th of 7 repeats. My daughter said if I liked knitting it so much I should make another one instead of re-knitting the same one over and over. Yeah, she's pretty funny:)

I also decided to pull out the curtains that I knitted quite a while back. I still needed to weave in the ends, wash and block it and then sew the top into a tab to put the curtain rod through....

This window is over my kitchen sink and would have originally looked outside to the back of the house. At some point a porch was build and then turned into an extra room. My guess is that this was used as a wash house as this house was built in 1920 in the heart of Kansas, where there wasn't electricity until around the mid to late 1940's (the house still has some of the original wiring). As there was no electricity, there was no bathroom. A small room was made by way of cutting off one of the 2 bedrooms and a toilet and sink fits in it, but our shower is actually located in this room off the back of the kitchen, you guessed it, in direct view of this window:) This has been a problem for several years now as our daughter isn't allowed in the kitchen when her father is in the shower, and vise-versa - somehow it doesn't matter one bit if I walk through or if I'm in the shower. :/ So I promised to make these curtains years ago, and now they are finally done!! :) Daughter will probably decide to move out any day now,  HAHAHA!!!! I used THIS free pattern and I really love how they turned out:)

Crafting On - Keep on Knitting

I am still mostly knitting on my sock. I got down to the heel flap on what will be the first usable sock...

But then I decided I needed another project to work on as well. I really want to start something new, but I also really want to get a couple things completed first. So I pulled out my Tidal Sands Cowl...

This project is just not wanting to cooperate with me!!! I pulled it out to knit on it, and after two rows around (over 600 stitches) I realized that there was a mistake a couple rows before where I started. :/ Hmm, maybe that was why I put it away in the first place? But not this time, I'm tinking away on it, going to fix that mistake (and the few others I made while tinking back lace) and then go from there.

I just joined The Knit Girllls Stash Dash on Ravelry so that is a little more incentive to finish up some WIP projects instead of starting something new:) I would really like to be able to complete the 3K finish line, but if I'm being really honest, I'll be doing good to finish the 1K!!

Crafting On - Getting Close

I've been a bit quiet on the blog lately, but no worries, I've been keeping my hands busy behind the screen:)

I've mostly been working away at the John Deere baby blanket AND....

Yep, I've learned to turn the heal on my sock!!! The above picture captured the color of the blanket pretty well, but made the sock look purple. The picture below is almost dead on with coloring:)

 All that is left is the foot and toe, and after looking at the instructions for both, I don't think I'll have any problems with it. I'm so excited to have gotten past the heal turn, and after watching a video or two, it really wasn't all that hard!! I can't wait to get this one done and start all over again:)

Hopefully by next week I'll have cast on the next sock and have the baby blanket done and ready to go to the expectant parents!!  Then I'll have to see what I'll work on next;)

Friday Night Sew In

I'm a bit late this time (again) as Friday nights tend to be hard to find time to sew. I planned well this time and started on Thursday, but then I melted a zipper to the fabric (OOPS!!) and needed to run to the store. That's okay though, lesson learned:)

I had planned to work on a hanging 'tuck' finish for a spring design I stitched, but I then I started working on a zipper bag that my sister in law wanted for a friend, and well, that's when the zipper accident happened. I persevered, and now have a matching set all ready to go...

And I'm SUPER excited about my new labels!!! I'm getting so close to being able to open up an Etsy store:) 

I do, however need to work a bit more on sizing. I'm going to have a few people look at the sizes of these with their stitching projects (my sister-in-law uses her bags for stitching). I'm sure this would work well for larger knitting/crochet projects, but I think the big bag is too tall for stitching. We will see what they think:)

Crafting On - Spring Stitching

Usually I post knitting or crochet updates when I link up with Crafting On, but as I am working on the same thing I have been for several weeks (and didn't get very far with it this last week), I thought I'd post something a bit different.

I LOVE to knit and crochet, but my first love was cross stitch. I did my first project in high school sewing class when we had to choose one project that was not machine sewn and after that I was hooked. Back in the early 90's the choices for patterns was much more limited, and in my opinion, not nearly as nice as what we have today. Today we almost have too many choices, and as I have lots of patterns already, and lots more that I want, I know that I will never actually have time to stitch them all - but I really should try;)

This adorable carrot pattern was designed by SubRosa as a freebie offered a few weeks ago to whomever purchased a pattern from her Etsy shop. I thought I could get out of there with just one pattern and this freebie, but alas, I purchased two patterns and have plans to go back for more!! :) This will make into a pouch that holds a couple felt carrots. The pattern for the felt carrots was included in the freebie. I don't see that this pattern is available right now, maybe she'll release it for sale at a later date.

And this pattern is the latest release from Marianne Meyer of Midnight Stitching (she's my sister-in-law:). She released a set of seasonal pincushion patterns and while this one was originally charted to be one color all over, I thought it would look cute in multi color:) I think I'm going to make a tuck hanger for this instead of a pincushion, but I'm not sure yet.

My plan is to use the time set aside for this Friday's FNSI (Friday Night Sew In hosted by Wendy at Sugar Lane Designs) as my time to finish these up. We will see how far I get:)

Crafting On - It's Growing!!

Other than a few hiccups with finding the right dye-lot for the green, I'd say the 'John Deere' baby blanket it coming along nicely!! The colors are even growing on me:) It is starting to remind me of a bright, sunshiny, spring day!!

I didn't even pay attention to the dye lots as I don't usually have problems with this yarn, but the two on top don't match. The color is close, but they are a lot more dull than the others. I had to go back to the store and only found 2 in the same dye lot, and then to a different town where I bought the 4 skeins they had. There is one more store close enough to check if this is still not enough, but I'm hoping it will be. The yellow was fine and I'm sure I have enough of it now:) 

The colors almost match my tulips (and dandelion patch!!) perfectly...

On other crafting notes: I'm just about finished with my mother in law's birthday stitching now, and am itching to get back to the carrot bag stitching project too!! I just love keeping my hands busy:)

Craft On - John Deere Green

It took me a couple weeks, but I did finally make a decision on the colors for the 'John Deere' baby blanket that I'm making for a friend of my husband. I have to say I'm not a fan as I like pastel colors for babies, but I think they will be happy with it:) And really that is all that matters. Here is the progress so far...

I'm using the Triplet Ripple pattern by Marie Segares more or less. I am doing 4 rows green and 2 rows yellow. Not sure if I'll do a boarder or not yet. Part of that will depend on how long this takes as the baby is due mid May:)

I've actually only met the father once and never met the mother, but I'm hoping I can this time as I know how excited the father is about getting to choose the theme for baby boy:)

Yarn Along - Making Hats

Linking with Ginny of 'Small Things' on her Yarn Along/Read Along blog hop and with Nicole of Frontier Dreams and her 'Keep Calm and Craft On' blog hop. 

I stayed calm and tried not think of all the things I want to cast on!!! If you remember, last week I had SO MANY PLANS!!! But I reigned them in, set about working on the hat I started for my daughter and starting a hat for myself. I even put in a few more rows on my lap blanket. What I didn't do was work on my Tidal Sands cowl, which I really need to get back to. Here is a picture of this weeks' progress...

Reading - Audible book: Sand and Ash by Amy Harmon. This was an amazing book and I know some of the reason it was so good was the narrator that read it. She did a fantastic job. This is one of those stories that has tons of 'feels' and leaves you not wanting to read or watch anything else lest you lose those 'feels'. I really haven't been able to decide what to read next as I'm sure nothing else will match up. So I got 'Knitting Pearls' by Ann Hood to read here and there over then next week as this will be totally different. I also bought another Audible book by Amy Harmon for when I am ready for a new story.

I also picked up a few baby knitting books at our library. I still haven't decided what to make for my cousin's baby. A few of you suggested a sweater, and I'd love to do that, but have never knitted a sweater before and am afraid she's be 12 before I got it done:) There are a couple sweaters in these books that look like they might be doable, but I'm not convinced yet. Maybe a baby hat? Hmm, we will see.

Knitting: In the lower corner there is a blob of darkness which is a KitKat Hat for my daughter. Not sure why it turned out looking black, it is really dark brown instead. This one is well over half way done and I should have it completed by tomorrow. In the middle is a super soft hat I am making for myself. This is the Knit Night Hat pattern that I started in the multi colored yarn to begin with, but it was turning out too thick, and I'm sure the gauge would have been off. The green/pink yarn seems much better and while I really love the multi colored yarn, I'm thinking it'll be better off as a project bag:) So more plans in the making!!! And tomorrow starts Helen Stewart of Curious Handmade's MKAL on Ravelry!!! I'm super excited to finally get to see the beginnings of the shawl we are going to make:) Still not completely sure what yarn combo I'm going to use but I'm thinking it's going to be this...

I wish the gray was more of a warm light brown, but they didn't have that, so I went with gray. I still have time though as I will be starting the shawl with the cream color. I also won a free pattern from Helen Stewart in a drawing she did and I'm thinking I'm going to choose her Summertide Shawl pattern. I just love the different color combos people have done this one in.

I Need More Needles!!!

Like I need another hole in my head!! My resolve to finish up projects and only start new ones as I get others done has flown out the window, so to speak. I wanted something different to show off this week that was small and quick because I have been working on a large-ish cowl and a lap blanket for the past couple of weeks and they are becoming boring to show off and going so slowly, so I cast on a couple wash clothes. They are small, quick and brightly colored which is a big change from my previous projects...

Also, my daughter asked for another KitKat Hat (not politically motivated, she just really likes cats:).
This time she wanted one in brown and since I already had the yarn for it, I cast it on right away. THEN I went to the craft store, not for yarn, but you know I had to at least look and I found some really fun yarn that I think will look great with the Knit Night Hat. I was going to go ahead and cast that one on too, but I found out that the needles that I am using for the ribbing on my daughter's hat are the same needles I need for the beginning of this hat. Hmm, good thing I don't have a good yarn store close or I might have needed to get more needles too!!

On top of this, I am set to take part in a MKAL by Helen Stewart of Curious Handmade that starts next week. I am all ready with needles and yarn, and while purchasing the yarn for that I decided that I like it for Celes wrap by Jared Flood too. I had started a couple years ago and then changed my mind on the yarn. AND I really want to re-cast on Project Peace (in which I will use the yarn I pulled out from Celes to use on this:).

I was doing so good, keeping myself from a huge 'Cast On ALLLLLL the pretty little things' party, but now, not so much. We will see how this plays out:) Besides, this is the fun part anyway!!!

Reading: I finally finished 'Rent Collector' by Camron Wright. It was pretty good, but really slow. The end was moving and I am happy I forced myself to finish it. I also listened to 'To Die For' by Alice Clark-Platts. It was a short story and very different from the other. It was kind of dark and not great, but a good change of pace. (Some cursing, a suicide, an attempted rape - just so you know before you 'read' it).  I am getting ready to start 'From Sand and Ash' by Amy Harmon and I really don't know anything about it. Hopefully it will be a good one:)

Yarn Along

I'm joining in on this week's Yarn Along hosted by Ginny from Small Things. For this KAL we post what knitting projects we are working on as well as what books we are currently reading. Here is an over-view picture of what I've been up to... 

Reading: I finished both books and they were very different, but both really good reads. Sweater Quest had a section that featured Stephanie Pearl McPhee of The Yarn Harlot. I've read her blog for some time now, but never any of her books. I love her sense of humor and now I'm on the lookout for one of her books to be my next read:)

The Things We Wish Were True did have all kinds of secrets that everyone was keeping and some did intersect with others. Everything from peeping Toms to lying, cheating and stalking, but the book moved along quickly and while each character had their share of heartache, there was plenty of positive things happening too and in the end lots of happiness as secrets came out, but love still prevailed:)

I didn't post a picture of 'Dockside', the MKAL from Alicia Plummer because I never went back and fixed the mistake I made over two weeks ago. So no more knitting got done on it. But I have been knitting away at the curtains I am making. I'm super happy with how these are turning out. ***As a side note, soon after taking this picture, I made a mistake on this one too, so now I have to go back and fix one or the other just so I can have something to knit!!! OR I could start something new, I guess, but I really want to get at least one of these projects done before I allow something else to steal my interests:) 

Yarn Along

I'm joining in on this week's Yarn Along hosted by Ginny from Small Things. For this KAL we post what knitting projects we are working on as well as what books we are currently reading. Here is an over-view picture of what I've been up to... 

What I'm reading: I've pretty much given up on Twyla Tharp's 'Creative Habbit' at this point. While it has had some nuggets of wisdom for the creative hobbyist, it really is more centered around the creative professional (artists, musicians or in Ms. Tharp's case choreographers). Which is fine, but it's not been super helpful to me. She is very thorough on this topic, so it might be of interest to you:)

Sweater Quest by Adrienne Martini has been entertaining. I love this type of book that takes you through the process of what a person is trying to accomplish. A few times she gets really wordy on things that a knitter probably has at least general knowledge of (even one like me that is fairly new to knitting), but this has only happened a couple of times, and other wise she is pretty funny and easy to relate to.

I'm not very far in to Things We Wish Were True by Marybeth Mayhew Whalen, but so far it has been really good. Probably good enough to keep me up most of the night if so much hadn't been going on lately to make me so tired;) It's a book about several people who all live in the same neighborhood, many of their families knowing each other for many years, who are all hiding secrets, some even from their own husbands. I'm thinking that some of these secrets are going to inter-connect, but I haven't gotten that far yet.

 And on to knitting. I'm still working on Alicia Plummer's MKAL 'Dockside' (the MKAL can be found on Ravelry). I was starting to catch up to the release dates, but then hit a snag a few days ago and haven't really picked it up again to find out exactly what I did. I have really enjoyed this project though and have learned several new stitches as well as finding out (because of one of those new stitches), that I've been wrapping my yarn wrong?!?!? ACK! Fixing this mistake is what lead to me getting behind because I started over and started wrapping the yarn the correct way, and not only did the dropped stitch (purposeful dropped stitch:), turn out right, but my lacework section was a lot more open too. So that got me thinking that maybe I should start a couple of my other 'in-progress' projects over too and see if it helped them as well.

So I started these Dappled Lace Cafe Curtains by Pick Knit Design Team over. This was a pretty big decision since I already had about 6 inches done on it. I am doing mine with size 5 needles using size 3 cotton crochet thread. Yeah, not super nice on the hands as it has no give to it, but I had also decided that instead of one long panel, I really wanted two panels that I could open when I want. Wrapping the yarn the correct way really opened up the lacework and made the pattern show much better, so I'm happy even though I had to start it over:) I have one other project that is mostly lacework, but it is a lot more complicated and I'm much further into it, so I'm not sure I'll start it over.

Stitcher's Meet and Greet Blog Hop

Thank you once again to Madam Samm from Sew We Stitch for hosting another fun blog hop. This time I didn't even have to finish stitching or sewing anything to play along. I have lots and lots of past projects to show off... 

See? I came by learning to cross stitch during my freshman year in high school. I took sewing class and as one of our projects we had to learn some kind of hand stitching. Cross stitch was the most popular in my class so I did it, and really have been ever since.

 

Of course over the years I've learned lots more about cross stitch than what I learned in school, and over the years the craft has changed a bit as well, growing in popularity and there-for giving lots more options for creativity. There are so many sizes and colors of fabric and floss to choose from now, which is lots of fun!! As you can see from above I do tend to stick with tan/brown/neutral colors most of the time and the smaller the weave the better!! I am mostly partial to 36-40 count linen or evenweave, but I will stitch on practically any count.  

 

I tend to have lots of projects going at any time and for a few years I participated in challenges that had you starting a new project every day for the first 15 days of the year. That was a lot of fun, but got a bit overwhelming to me. I also tend to do the stitching, but then don't do anything with the end product:) I just enjoy the process, but I'm trying to get better at doing the finishes. Here is a pic of one of the only projects that ever got framed...

As a birthday present my sister-in-law got this framed for me. This is Autumn Snapperland from Bent Creek. Eventually I will get the other seasons done in this series.

Speaking of my sister-in-law, she is a cross stitch designer!! Marianne Meyer of Midnight Stitching is my sister-in-law, which makes for fun get-togethers, really fun shopping trips and lots of fun stitching for each other at Christmas:)

 

I do a lot of stitching as gifts or exchanges and some for myself as well, but I have also done some stitching for a charity called LoveQuiltsUSA (they have chapters in a few other countries as well). This organization collects stitched panels and makes them into themed quilts for children with various illnesses and disabilities. Here are a couple I have done for them...

The top one was for a little boy who wanted anything with blue in it. Of course the bottom one isn't hard to figure out:) Also for a boy who loved anything fast!! These are a lot of fun to stitch and it's so nice to see the final finished quilt with your well loved project going to a child who needs a little extra love.

Tree Bird Hop

Madam Samm from Sew We Quilt is hosting the Tree Bird Blog Hop along with Lana at It Seems to Be Sew cheering us along!! Thank you so much ladies for such a fun blog hop!!!

It took me a little while to decide what to do for this hop. There was a line of fabric that was especially for this hop, but I wasn't able to get it this time. So I needed to come up with a different plan. I have decided that I really just don't like to quilt, sewing is okay and I love to stitch, but I have just lost the interest in quilting, at least for now. Hopefully that will come back in time.

Since the theme was birds, I knew that anything I did would likely be a gift for my mother-in-law. She loves birds, loves to attract them to her yard, and to watch them. I had wanted to get her a hand-towel for Christmas last year that I saw, but when I went to buy it, it was gone. So that's where I started. I bought some flour sack type hand towels to stitch on. I measured the cloth count and it looked to be about 38 ct. But once I started stitching the boarder for the birds it turned out like this...

Can you see how this doesn't work? :) A little too wonky. Okay, so the next plan was to find some hand towels that were meant to be stitched on and that worked much better...

My plan was to stitch one on each side, but life happened. A little over a week ago I ended up in the ER with severe pain. It ended with a minor surgery that really slowed things up for me. More about that in another post.  

So at some point before Christmas this little birdy will have a friend to keep her company. I also decided that I wanted to make a couple cloth birds that could be used as Christmas ornaments for my mil as well. I didn't end up getting to that until this week, so only one of them got done, but it turned out so cute..

The pattern for this bird, and many, many others can be found at www.downeastthunderfarm.com. I am hoping to get a few more of these done before Christmas. Maybe a couple for my tree as well:)
